Nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) are among the most toxic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic sub-stances that have been detected in ambient air. Like PAHs, nitro-PAHs are primarily adsorbed on air particulate matter. They can be measured in the particulate fraction sampled at urban locations, typically in the 1 to pg/m3. The rapid population growth in large urban areas, has resulted in a precipitous increase in the consumption of fossil fuels, mainly by the transport sector, diesel vehicles are a significant source of air pollution by particulate matter emissions, damaging the population health, because of the size and composition of these particles, as they may contain carcinogenic organic compounds such as. Diesel-powered equipment is used frequently in the mining industry. They are energetically more efficient and emit lower quantities of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide than the gasoline equipment. However, diesel engines release more diesel particulate matter (DPM) during the combustion process which has been linked to harmful health effects. This study assessed the trends in DPM exposure. In this work, we developed a novel quantitative analysis method for detecting nitropolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) in PM samples with graphene as a matrix using MALDI-TOF MS. A good linearity was obtained for the typical four nitro-PAHs, namely 1-nitropyrene (1-NP), 2-nitrofluorene (2-NFL), 6-nitrochrysene (6-NC) and 9-nitroanthracene (9-NA) with the correlation coefficient.
